Wearing corrective eye glasses or contacts keeps you sharp

A University of Michigan study found that people with better vision (including those who were corrective eye glasses or contacts) were 63% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease over an 81/2 year period than those with poor eyesight who did not correct it.  It is thought that some vision problems and dementia may share the same underlying causes.  In addition, people who do not see well tend to avoid brain – boosting habits such as exercise, reading, socializing, word games,...

Fun in the Sun? Only if you have the right protection!

Radiation is energy in the form of waves (beams) or particles. Radiation waves are generally invisible, have no weight or odor, and have no positive or negative charge. Ionizing radiation has a lot of energy that gives it the ability to cause changes in atoms—a process called ionization. Non-ionizing radiation has less energy than ionizing radiation. When non-ionizing radiation interacts with atoms, it does not cause ionization. Radio and TV signals, microwaves, and laser light are non-ionizing types of radiation. Some forms of non-ionizing radiation can damage tissues if we are exposed too much. For instance, too much ultraviolet (UV) light from lying out in the sun is known to cause some skin cancers; even moderate amounts can cause skin burns. Resources: Radiation answers.org Ultraviolet sub-bands: UVA : at wavelengths of 320-400 nm accounts for  90% of UVR reaching the Earth’s surface. UVB : 290-320 nm  is 10% of UVR reaching the earth surface and  is largely responsible for skin cancer.  UV-B is absorbed in the upper stratosphere (about 25 miles above the earth) at the level of the ozone layer. uVB is 1000 times more potent in causing sunburn (erythema) than UVA. UVC : 200-290 nm  is absorbed in the upper atmosphere, but would cause severe cellular damage if it reached living organisms. How can you be Protected?  A Sun Protection Factor (SPF *) >15 is required; more than 15...
