Fun in the Sun? Only if you have the right protection!

Radiation is energy in the form of waves (beams) or particles. Radiation waves are generally invisible, have no weight or odor, and have no positive or negative charge. Ionizing radiation has a lot of energy that gives it the ability to cause changes in atoms—a process called ionization. Non-ionizing radiation has less energy than ionizing radiation. When non-ionizing radiation interacts with atoms, it does not cause ionization. Radio and TV signals, microwaves, and laser light are non-ionizing types of radiation. Some forms of non-ionizing radiation can damage tissues if we are exposed too much. For instance, too much ultraviolet (UV) light from lying out in the sun is known to cause some skin cancers; even moderate amounts can cause skin burns.
